Job interviews typically follow a script: "Tell me about yourself. Walk me through your journey. Why this change? Why now?"

When listening to you, recruiters and hiring decision makers are asking themselves: “WHAT'S IN THIS FOR ME?"

THIS MEANS YOU NEED TO FOCUS YOUR STORY ON YOU, BUT IN THE FRAMEWORK OF HOW IT WILL BENEFIT THEM.

HOW?

​By being 100% PREPARED with your story & 100% PRESENT in the moment.

The "real" reasons of your story don't matter. Your past isn't perfect. They get it.

They'll smell canned responses and defensiveness a mile away. They are trained in snuffing it out.

You'll get the friendly one, the ones who stand-off on purpose, who test your credibility, and the ones who put you on the defensive.

They're also not interested in explanations, what didn't happen, or apologies in any form.


If you go into a conversation with fear, doubt or indecision, it will be revealed in your speaking.

This is why you need to first be inwardly convicted in your value, and then convince them of your value through your story.

This is MUCH easier and more effective than trying to "fake it" because you feel like an imposter.

You need to build your story around the results you've accomplished, and give concrete examples of how you led or contributed to a project or campaign. Share about programs, memberships and conferences you've engaged and connect the dots to how these relate to the position you're applying for.

You need to confidently bridge the gap of your past experience with your future plans.
AND when you are telling it, you can’t sound rehearsed or scripted.

You have to know how to say the same thing in several ways and handle repeated questions, unexpected probing and possible skepticism.

This doesn't happen when we try to go off a script.
